Penny and I lounged, curled up together, in the warm water of the clawfoot tub. In the absence of any other furniture, a bath had seemed the best option for some quiet post-coital chatting.

“How does it feel?” asked Penny. My mind flashed back to the crushing, all-consuming pleasure that had burned between my legs while she bit into my shoulder twenty minutes before. She must have seen the redness rising in my cheeks, because she continued. “Owning your first home?”

I let the heat in my body subside before I answered, so I could do so with a clear head.

“Different,” I said. “From what I expected. You know, I thought it would be as simple as moving into a new apartment, but there’s something special about it. I can put down roots. Imagine what I might be like when I live here in ten years, twenty. That’s a nice thing to do.”

Penny smiled and rubbed her foot against my side. Though the tub was large, we were entwined.

“I’m glad you feel that way,” she said. “That’s how I hoped you’d answer.”

“What about you? Do you think you’d buy a house sometime?”

I hadn’t meant to stump her, but Penny thought for far longer than I would have guessed she would.

“If I were in any other city, except maybe Vancouver, I would say an unabashed ‘hell yes’ to that. But as it stands I can’t see any way I’d be able to afford it.”

Right. Not everyone struck it rich with their first major career job, Skye.

“It must be tough to see people buying in your city, to help them buy and sell and all that jazz, but to think you might never be one of them.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I love my job!” Penny said, as if backpedaling.

“I know, I could see that all over your face,” I said.

“Oh, good.”

“And singing your musical songs, baking actual cookies,” I continued. “You’re like the Mary Poppins of real estate.”

“I’m assuming that’s a compliment?” said Penny, raising her eyebrow as she nudged me again with her foot.

“Would I have let anyone else buy me a house?”

“I think you wanted anyone else for a good chunk of time, there!”

“Fair, I did. But you won me over,” I said. Penny smiled, but my stomach squirmed at the phrase.

In more ways than one. Was that too forward?

All that time optimizing matching algorithms for the dating app and I had no clue about how to make small talk. There was a big difference between theoretical compatibility and actual, real conversation.

“You did a great job and I’ll give you a glowing recommendation to anyone who even looks at a house around me,” I said.

“That means a lot. Thank you.”

We sat in the warm water for a while, basking in each other’s company and the contented silence of the house. I think we were both so satiated that I couldn't think straight, so we bobbed in the water, brushing up against each other.

Finally, I had to admit that it was time to re-enter the world.
